The Lagos State Government has sealed Alade Market, Ikeja, and Alaba Rago Market, Ojo, for various environmental infractions, including indiscriminate waste disposal, lack of adequate waste bins, and refuse burning.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, said the joint enforcement action by officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), was part of ongoing measures to sanitise markets in the state.

He said, “The ongoing enforcement against filth in markets shows the state government’s commitment to keeping business environment clean. We urge businesses to abide by environmental laws for a clean and healthy cityscape.”

Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stressed the importance of traders carrying out their transactions in clean and hygienic surroundings, adding that the closure was a wake-up call for markets to honour their responsibility towards the environment.

“The closure of Alade and Alaba Rago markets is a wake-up call for everyone to be responsive and follow environmental regulations. It is hoped that this measure will nudge other markets to follow rules on sanitation and hygiene, to make the state a clean and safe place for all,” he said.
