A viral social media post purportedly authored by President of the United States of America, Donald Trump attacking Nigeria’s security situation has been exposed as fabricated after circulating widely online.

The screenshot, styled to resemble a post from Trump, claimed the country had become “a total disaster” and referenced attacks in Maiduguri while questioning the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

But checks showed the message did not originate from any verified account linked to the former US president and was never posted on platforms officially associated with him.

The image itself carried a bold red stamp reading “FAKE”, underscoring warnings that the statement was fabricated.

Media analysts say the episode illustrates how quickly misinformation spreads when linked to prominent global figures.

“This is how disinformation travels online,” a digital media observer said, adding “Once a famous name is attached to a claim, many people share it before verifying the source.”

Fact-check advocates also warned that screenshots are among the easiest tools for spreading misleading political claims.

“If you cannot trace a viral statement to the original account, you should question it,” one analyst said, further disclosing “Screenshots can easily be edited to appear authentic.”

The fabricated post, which sparked debate in some online circles, has since been widely debunked.

Multiple fact-checkers insist, “It may look dramatic, but the truth is simple — the post never came from Trump.”
