offering listeners an unprecedented look

Spotify has rolled out a new feature designed to peel back the layers behind some of the world’s most popular songs, offering listeners an unprecedented look into the creative forces that shape the music they love.

The feature, known as SongDNA, is now available in beta for Premium users globally, turning what was once a passive listening experience into an interactive journey through the origins and evolution of a track.

With a simple tap while a song is playing, users can access a network of collaborators, including songwriters, producers, and engineers, as well as explore samples, interpolations, and covers that contributed to the final sound.

The feature allows listeners to move seamlessly from one creator to another, tracing connections across genres, eras, and even continents.

Spotify says the goal is to make the “creative lineage” of songs more transparent, giving fans a clearer picture of how music comes together while also spotlighting the often-unseen contributors behind the scenes.

“SongDNA is designed to make a song’s creative lineage more transparent so fans can easily explore the people and influences behind the music they love,” Jacqueline Ankner, the company’s head of songwriter and publisher partnerships, said.

The rollout reflects a growing push within the streaming industry to deepen user engagement beyond playlists and algorithms, transforming music consumption into a more immersive and educational experience.

Beyond fans, the feature also introduces a new layer of visibility for the creative community. Artists, songwriters, and producers can now have their contributions highlighted in a structured, discoverable format, potentially opening up new opportunities for recognition and collaboration.

Spotify notes that the data powering SongDNA comes from a mix of artist submissions and community contributions, with creators and their teams able to review and manage how their work is represented through its Spotify for Artists platform.

The company describes SongDNA as a complement to its existing “About the Song” feature, but with a broader scope — shifting from storytelling to exploration. While “About the Song” focuses on the narrative behind a track, SongDNA maps out the relationships that define it.

As the feature gradually expands ahead of a wider rollout expected in April, Spotify is betting that fans want more than just music — they want context, connection, and a deeper understanding of the art they consume.

In doing so, SongDNA may not just change how people listen to songs, but how they discover them — one connection at a time.
