Super Model Oluchi Onweagba’s Shocker On Africa’s Next Top Model Project: ‘ I would Not Have Done It If It Were Just Nigeria… It Would Have Been Boring!’
Friday, November 8 2013, Super model Oluchi Onweagba Orlandi made a shocking declaration and public display.
She walked out midway into the press conference for her much expected show, Africa’s Next Top Model With Oluchi staged midway into the official launch of the International Project.
And this way not before she told the media present ‘I like the fact that it is the whole continent, I would not have done it or be a part of it, if it were just Nigeria…I like the idea that it’s the whole continent’
The initiator of the project who arrived minutes after 8p.m – 2hours after the 6p.m arrival time and, 1 hour after the show was supposed to commence with a media chat- had earlier stated ‘ the fashion industry is really small on the continent of Africa, and in order for the show to be extremely interesting, it is better to have a joint next top model. If it’s just the individual countries, it’s boring, there would be no excitement’.
According to witnesses at the event, Oluchi was arrogant and talked down on invited media. She was said to have pointedly mention that, ‘she was there to party, not to answer questions’.
She put action to words by walking out of the press conference held right in the middle of the official launch- while other guests look on – thanks to technical hitches that created dull and idle moments for all.
Her ‘Scouting Director’, Remi Adetiba was reportedly left impromptu fielding the rest of the questions.
The event was the official launch and airing of the premiere episode of the show. The affair held at Pravada Lounge, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Technical lapses and Oluchi’s unbecoming conduct downed great expectations for the event.
The project is described as ‘African version of the international model, Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model’. It related versions such as UK Next Top Model, Australia Next Top Model, Germany Next Top Model et al.
Oluchi and her crew secured the franchise to stage the Africa’s Next Top Model.
The then Oluchi Onweagba kick started a her modeling career by winning the M-Net Face of Africa ( now called Nokia Face of Africa) in 1998.
It was the first-ever continent-wide model competition, organized by the South African channel M-Net in collaboration with Elite Model Management.
An elated nation and media had given the then 17yr old all support obtainable before and after winning. She was widely celebrated.
The media positioning provided veritable ground work and foundation to complement her skills to soar beyond her dreams, and be where she is today.
And she paid the nation back with her ‘obscene utterances’ and ‘ faulty display’ during what should have been ‘ a big day for all’.
A more detailed version of the ‘drama’ at the event is available in Encomium Magazine.
