Structures On Waterways In Ikoyi, Other Areas Will Be Demolished – Lagos Commissioner, Wahab

Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab has revealed a major step about to be taken by the Lagos state government to tackle erosion.

Citing Ikoyi, Obalende and Awoyaya areas of the state as examples, Wahab disclosed that structures built on the canals and waterways will be demolished.

He disclosed owners of such structures have been notified.

Announcing the development on Sunday, October 8, 2023, Wahab posted on social media “the flooding in Lagos State is caused majorly by the recklessness of a few people. After our inspection tour yesterday, we have given a requisite notice (7 days) to owners of structures built on the canals and waterways in the Ikoyi, Obalende, Awoyaya axis. In a few days, these structures will be demolished to give way for the wastewater so as to find a solution to the flooding issues.”

The development adds to the other steps already taken by Wahab to achieve the objective of “to secure a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, that promotes tourism, boosts economic growth and enhances the overall well-being of the citizens” since he took office on Monday, September 18, 2023.

Some of the other steps taken – to be sustained until normalcy is restored – include the clearing of illegal dumpsites, shanties, markets, and illegal structures and drainages.

With Orile – Iganmu – Mile 2 , Festac, Iyana Iba, Alaba Ojo and Magodo as starting points, the exercises are earmarked to be statewide until Lagos is declared clean, safe, and health.
