Stakeholders in the politics of Ogun State have identified 15 reasons former Governor Gbenga Daniel should be elected Senator.

Daniel is the Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ogun East in the Saturday, February 25, 2023 election.

Stakeholders under the banner of Ogun Youth for Good Governance (OYGG) list 15 reasons he should be elected in a post with the header “15 REASONS WHY OGD SHOULD BECOME A SENATOR”.

Here are the reasons.

1.      OGD has the requisite experience about the needs of the people and how to meat those needs using the instrumentally of good governance.  He would therefore effectively represent them at the upper chamber having performed similar functions as a state governor.

2.      OGD must have interacted with the other two arms of government for a very long. He must therefore know the strength, weakness, opportunities and limitations of the other two arms adequately, A governor in the senate will therefore be in a position to influence the nation’s legal frame work to re-examine the weakness in the three arms of government for necessary improvement. He will be able to promote the opportunities further while the limitations will be addressed without jeopardizing the existing strength of the other arms of government for the good of the society.  He would be in a better position to work for the good of not only his senatorial district and state but also the entire country.

3.      OGD has had various engagement and interactions with the federal institutions. He knows from experience the loopholes and the opportunities yet untapped in our federalism. He is therefore in a ventage position, if he becomes a senator, to match his field experience with the legal instruments that shape the relationship between the states and federal government of Nigeria.

4.      In the same vein, the exposure of a former to international agencies in the quest to develop his state must have sensitized him to the various areas of advantage and disadvantage in relating with such international bodies. At the Senate therefore, he will be in a position to weigh the identified advantages and disadvantages within the nations legal frame work, recommend what to sustain and what to discard for the good of the people and the nation.

5.      OGD knows the relationship between and among states of the federation. The former governor is therefore qualified to be a senator as he would bring his wealth of experience to play on matters relating to the balance of relationship among the different tiers of government and what to discard for the good of the people and the nation.

6.      OGD is a visionary with unequalled passion for service. He is therefore in a position to further use the instrumentality of the laws of the federation to pursue the multifarious aspirations of the people of Ogun State especially the Ogun East Senatorial district in the upper legislative chamber and also work for the greater glory of Nigeria.

7.      OGD is known for his policy of Equity, Justice and Fairness in Ogun state. All developmental projects are equitably distributed across the State. There is no section of the state that is marginalized, in fat his crusade to redress the long time marginalization of Yewa-Awori in Ogun State is the root cause of his several political battles he had fought and won.  He is known in this regard as Equity Grand Master. Attaining that feat therefore lays credence to the submission that OGD is the best person to represent Ogun East at the Senate in 2011 because, he will be able to continue and influence the process of the laws of the country in the direction of Equity, justice and Fairness as it affects his senatorial district of Ogun East and the entire country.

8.      OGD is the only Governor in Nigeria in the 2007-2011 political dispensation whose victory was challenged by as much as three candidate at the tribunal to the Appeal Court in Ibadan, Oyo State. OGD won all squarely from the tribunal to the Appeal court.  Not only that, all the other positions challenged were not lost to legal tussle.  This vigorous interaction that spanned a period of about three years has exposed OGD to a very robust relationship with the opposition and the judiciary, Having successfully navigated a state described as star studded in terms of powerful Nigerians and political actors, OGD is solidly prepared for a national assignment at the senate

9.      In the life OGD’s Administration i.e. 2003 to 2011, three presidents of the federal Republic of Nigeria visited Ogun State i.e. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, Late Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua GCFR and Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR. This is an indication of a robust working relationship between Ogun State (under the leadership of OGD) and the Federal Governement. Ogun under OGD consolidated a cordial working relationship with the federal Government and his synergy would continue when he becomes a senator of the Federal Republic

10.     The number of mega projects initiated by OGD such as the three Free-Trade Zones, the Deep Seaport and the Airport need Federal Government’s support at different stages of their development. So OGD at the senate, will not only facilitate what he started for the good of the state, Nigerians and West Africa, he will equally fast-track its completion and delivery within a very short time through necessary legal backing, influence, lobbying and federal support.

11.     As an accomplished engineer, OGD was able to display his unalloyed confidence and support for Nigerian Professionals throughout his tenure as Ogun State Governor.  Almost all projects such as roads, stadia, secretariat buildings, bridges, etc. done in Ogun State were undertaken by Nigerians.  This is a feat that must be replicated at the favour Nigerians engineers and professionals, he will surely influence, support and pursue a policy of human capita development for all professionals in Nigeria.

12.     OGD will definitely not be a bench warmer at the senate because of his charisma, doggedness, resolve, capability, forthrightness, resilience and dauntless attributes. these attributes helped him to weather the political storms in Ogun State while his administration lasted. Having been able to surmount all the battles he has come out more strengthened to take on national challenges for his state in collaboration with other senators from other senatorial districts. He will therefore be able to secure whatever federal attention needed for his constituency and the state in general. Ogun will be robustly represented by OGD in the Senate

13.     Democracy can only thrive where people are free to express themselves without fear of molestation. As a democrat and a statesman, OGD was the first governor to sign the freedom of information bill (FOI Bill). This was borne out of his firm belief in importance of free flow of information in governance and democracy. As a senator therefore, OGD will definitely accelerate the process of turning the Foi Bill into law for the survival of democracy in Nigeria.

14.     OGD is a peace builder; in spite of the simulated political wars against him OGD remained focused and had a very Good working relationship with all the neighboring states in the interest of peace and development.  This experience will be very useful; at the federal level especially during period of national and international challenges.

15.     OGD has built an impressive array of contacts in different parts of the country and at all levels of government and institutions; this would be useful while performing his functions in the legislative chamber.  He tested and trusted based on his record of impressive achievement as the governor of Ogun State.

Taken together, in OGD Ogun State and Nigeria would have a worthy Senator.
