Vice President Kashim Shettima today declared open the 68th meeting of the United Nations Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF), held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-level gathering, the Vice President delivered a message that highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism for Africa’s future.

In his remarks, Shettima called on African countries to put in place policies that support eco-friendly tourism and protect the continent’s cultural heritage. He noted that tourism should not only be about economic gains but also about preserving the environment and identity of African communities.

He urged African leaders and stakeholders in the tourism sector to work together, find practical solutions, and attract more investment in infrastructure that can support long-term growth in the industry. According to him, tourism can play a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) if managed properly and tailored to the realities on the ground in different African countries.

Shettima also reaffirmed Nigeria’s full support for efforts to promote sustainable tourism practices across the continent. He stressed that these efforts must take into account Africa’s unique challenges and ensure that development in the tourism sector is inclusive and environmentally responsible.

The meeting, which brings together tourism officials, private sector leaders, and development partners from across Africa, is expected to produce ideas and partnerships that will shape the future of tourism on the continent.
