Senators Ahmed Lawan, George Akume Others Stage Walk Out Against Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu Acting In Bukola Saraki’s Absence

Senator Ahmed Lawan, George Akume and some others of the All Progressives Congress against the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President staged a walk out during plenary earlier today – Wednesday November 11 2015.

They were protesting Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu overseeing affairs of the day in the absence of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Ekweremadu is of the rival People’s Democratic Party, he is believed to have secured his current position in exchange for his party supporting Saraki emerging Senate President.

Senators Ahmed Lawan and George Akume, were favoured by the All Progressives Congress to emerge as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively at the May 9 inauguration of the Senate .

According to information sourced from Punch the senators walked out in company with some of their colleagues.

The paper specifically stated they were ‘protesting the decision of Senate President Bukola Saraki to allow his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu to preside over plenary in his absence.

Ekweremadu presided over the Wednesday sitting because Saraki was at the Presidential Villa to attend the swearing-in of new ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lawan and three others later held a brief discussion before they left to their various offices in the new senate wing.

The plenary was the first that Ekweremadu will preside over since the inauguration of the Eighth Senate.
