Omoni Oboli Goes Ahead With After Party Despite Inability To Premiere Okafor’s Law Due To Court Action

After weeks of planning and intense capital expenditure, actress, Omoni Oboli got the shock of her life when she was stopped from premiering her new movie, Okafor’s Law, on Friday, by a Federal High Court of Nigeria, in Lagos.

All preparations had been put in place, from the red carpet, cocktails, cinema hall to the after party, and a lot of entertainers had showed up in their Sunday best to watch the movie and turn up with Oboli.

According to court papers seen by Sunday Scoop, the suit was filed by Raconteur Productions Ltd. against Omoni Oboli, Dioni Visions and Filmone Ltd. It will be recalled that a Canada-based writer, Jude Idada, had last year accused Oboli of stealing his story and idea. Jude claimed that Omoni had earlier stolen his script for her first movie, Being Mrs Elliot, after he shared the idea with her. The writer further said that he charged the Wives on Strike actress N750,000 to write the script for Okafor’s Law, which she didn’t pay. According to him, he would have let the matter go but he was irked that Omoni was allegedly spreading tales that he was the one that stole her script, hence his decision to take the legal route.

Meanwhile, tearful Oboli told her guests on Friday that she believed the injunction secured by Idada was an abuse of the law. She said, “I believe the court judgment was an abuse of the law and we are going to take this up. I wrote the movie 100 per cent and we spent so much on it so it’s sad that some people want to spoil it. Despite the fact that the movie has been shown in several international festivals, it means nothing to me if my Nigerian fans don’t get to see it. By 5pm today (Friday), when everything was set for the premiere, we got an injunction that we should not show the movie. You must have heard some rumours but the movie is totally mine. Anyway, we’ll still party hard and tell the devil he’s a liar.”

After her tear-soaked speech, the actress proceeded with other guests to the upper terrace of the venue for an after-party where they made merry into the early hours of the next day.
