Only one man is standing between Ladi Adebutu and his gubernatorial ambition in Ogun State.

The person is Jimi Adebisi Lawal, the politician who returned to the PDP barely 3 months before May 25, 2022, PDP gubernatorial primary and became the rallying point of all those against Adebutu – particularly the hardcore loyalists of late Kashamu Buruji.

Lawal is a former special adviser to the Governor Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai.

A former Managing Director of a bank – defunct Alpha Merchant Bank -, Lawal was a gubernatorial aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general election and was a member of the party until he left earlier in the year.

The 63-year-old former bank chief has the strong backing of the Governor of Oyo state Seyi Makinde and Rivers state, Nyesom Wike.

The new entrant in the PDP is pushing his popularity on the wings of five programs that are; Economic Development, Human Capital Development (Health and Education), Infrastructure, Security & Justice, and Governance.

SocietyNow.Ng’s checks revealed that it is the move to protect his political interest that resulted in the court ruling that nullified the candidacy of Adebutu as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial flagbearer and canceled the results of all the party’s primary elections that produced candidates for the 2023 election in Ogun state.

Tuesday’s court ruling by the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, Ogun state is the result of a suit instituted by 370 out of 728 on the INEC – Independent Electoral Commission – list of ad-hoc delegates elected in the ward congresses held on the 30th of April, 2022.

They went to court with grievances that they weren’t allowed to vote during May 25, 2022, PDP gubernatorial primary and they wanted to vote for Jimi Lawal. Their prayer for a fresh election if Lawal is not declared winner was upheld by the court with all other primary elections by the party that produced candidates for the 2023 election affected.

The court ruled that a fresh primary election must be conducted within 14 days of the ruling.

“Adebutu’s work is cut for him, except he wants to continue to fight it out in court a with a possible re-enactment of the 2019 scenario hanging over his head, he needs to find a way to plead, negotiate with Jimi Lawal if he wants to retain the PDP gubernatorial ticket for the 2023 election” SocietyNow.Ng learned.

The 2019 scenario saw Adebutu lose the PDP gubernatorial ticket just hours before the election based on a court ruling that declared late Kashamu Buruji as the authentic candidate.
