Ibrahim Babangida

“The irony of life” is how a source simply put it.

The description refers to the current state of former military President, Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida.

The former military ruler who is widely known for the infamous decision of annulling what is widely upheld as the as the ‘’freest and fairest’’ election in the country currently battles persistent death rumours and ill health.

The latest episode comes in the week that leads to the anniversary of June 12 1993 Presidential election which he annulled.
And as usual with the reoccurring death talks, the speculations kick started while he was on medical trip abroad- Germany, specifically.

And as usual with past episodes it was his return, as after futile spirited moves by media managers , that laid the talks to rest.

The former head of the then Armed Forces Ruling Council annulled the June 12 1993 election based on what he claimed ‘’ Interest of the state’’.

Events later proved reasons behind the cancellation of what was internationally adjudged ‘’freest and fairest’’ election won by renowned money man, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola go beyond the public posture of the then military president.

That singular action – Annulment- further blotted his already ravaged image and acknowledgement as Military Dictator.

The development resulted in a chain of events that forced IBB as fondly called out of power and the death of Abiola in suspicious manner in the struggle to claim his mandate cemented the infamy the cancelation of the election earned the former military ruler.

Ironically, 23 years after while the nation remembers the man whose death sparked off national consciousness on the beauty of democracy – IBB battles death rumour that forced revelation of his battle with his health to be dispelled.
