+the Nmulti-million loss that forced ‘Thisday’ owner to meet striking workers demand
Controversial Business man, Jimoh Ibrahim is one of the ‘good fellas’ in the life of flamboyant Newspaper owner, Mr Nduka Obaigbena at present.
The two popular Nigerians have a newspaper and printing press each to their names- Thisday (by Obaigbena) and National Mirror (by Ibrahim).
Though his newspaper is flourishing by the day- Nduka is said to have huge ‘machine difficulties’ that have resulted in the closure of his printing press.
His challenges recently got compounded with workers angst over unpaid salaries.
Insiders attribute the current status between the two socialites to Ibrahim’s efforts in bailing out Obaigbena out of his newspaper problems.
Information revealed the owner of Jimoh Ibrahim
shutdown airline- Air Nigeria has made ‘all facilities’ at his printing press ‘open’ for the usage of Obaigbena and his crew in the face of workers revolt.
According to a source ‘ when striking workers shutdown Thisday office and refused all staffers entry, including the publisher…Mr Obaigbena spoke with Jimoh and the latter made his newspaper office available for those trusted with ensuring Nduka’s paper does not leave the streets in the midst of the workers turmoil’
Informants revealed a select number of Thisday staff resume at Jimoh’s National Mirror broad street office for production everyday- all through the 5day strike.
‘Despite the strike, most of the editorial staff worked on stories and submitted online….that was why it didn’t reflect in the quality of production that a strike was on all that period’ another source provided insight.
Sources claimed the management team moved their usual meeting with Chairman Obaigbena at hideout, Protea hotel to another spot at, Rock View to avoid any form of sabotage or harassment.
Jimoh Ibrahim proved a friend in need when he lowered standard at his Printing Press to accommodate the peculiar situation that bedevilled his friend’s business.
Sources confirmed though Thisday was printed at the National Mirror press before the worker’s strike- Jimoh Ibrahim went a step further to create an enabling environment for the incident not to scar Obaigbena.
Insiders revealed the powerful publisher would have outwitted his workers with patience but for the huge loss he was incurring daily.
‘Advertisers were taking their campaign to rival publications, particularly the Sun and Nation and this proved too much a cost to bear’ an insider revealed.
Informants disclosed ‘ Chairman was forced to meet workers in other cut his losses as soon as possible…he agreed to offset all backlog of salaries beginning with the production department, then the editorial and others’
The striking workers called off the exercise and allowed business to commence as usual at the place on Tuesday May 14 2013.
And thanks to the support of unusual helper- Mr Jimoh Ibrahim- connected nigerian Nduka Obaigbena escaped the turmoil from within without missing out on schedule and losing credibility.
