Veteran Yoruba actor, Chief Olalere Osunpaimo MFR — popularly known as Baba Eda or Eda Onileola — is alive and in good health, contrary to rumours circulating on social media.

Confusion erupted earlier on Facebook after unverified posts falsely claimed the iconic performer had passed away. The report quickly spread, prompting concern among fans and colleagues within the theatre and movie community.

However, calm returned on Thursday after the Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) officially debunked the rumour. Prince Adejonwo Oluwafemi Femson, National PRO of the association, described the claims as “false” and urged the public to ignore them.

According to him, the actor’s wife personally confirmed that the 84-year-old thespian is well.

Insiders re-emphaised the position late Friday night to dispell any lingering doubts about the wellbeing of the highly respected veteran.

Chief Paimo, one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre, has spent more than six decades shaping stage and screen performance in Nigeria. His portrayal of Eda Onileola remains one of the most memorable characters in Yoruba drama history, earning him national recognition and a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) honour.

ANTP noted that the rumour was the handiwork of “unscrupulous individuals” seeking attention at the expense of public trust. The association cautioned Nigerians to verify information before sharing, especially when it concerns public figures whose legacies mean so much to many.

Regarded as a custodian of Yoruba cultural expression, Baba Eda’s influence extends beyond acting to mentorship of younger artistes and leadership within the industry. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ANTP, a role that underscores his relevance and contribution to the growth of theatre arts in Nigeria.

The reassurance of his wellbeing has brought relief to admirers, many of whom took to social media to celebrate the clarification and express continued gratitude for his enduring legacy.

For now, fans can rest easy: Baba Eda Onileola remains very much alive — and still revered as one of the giants of Yoruba theatre.
