Before Governor Rauf Aregbesola had his way, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress- APC – at the national level fought hard to make Demola Adeleke the party’s candidate for the just concluded Osun West Senatorial election.

But the state Governor, Rauf Aregbesola vehemently kicked the against the idea.

He wanted to contain the political clout of the Adelekes once and for all by denying them political power.

The move was part of plan to have a vice grip on the politics of the state.

But the party leaders at the national level – including the power broker resident in Lagos – believed the better game plan was to keep the Adeleke’s political machinery within the party ,rather than pushing it into the waiting arms of “neutralised” political party, People’s Democratic Party.

The argument was that denying Demola, the younger brother of deceased Senator Isiaka Adeleke, the ticket would gift the PDP much needed leverage to stage a come back.

Aregbesola disagreed. The APC’s shadow election to determine party’s flag bearer was postponed twice as he locked horns with fellow leaders in his party, including two southwest governors and a major political influencer and two powerful office holders in Abuja, over who becomes party candidate.

He eventually had his way as Demola crossed over to the other side, his candidate Mudasiru Hussein – a sitting commissioner – became party candidate for the Saturday July, 8 Osun West Bye election.

And the result is here.

As feared by the party leaders, the Governor has gifted his fierce opposition party the power of come back.

The PDP won the election by a noticeable difference – 97,480 votes to APC’s 66,116 votes.

Since it secured victory, the party has embarked on an ground gaining drive.

And it’s popularity is soaring as the alleged ills and missteps of the APC and it’s promoters are being bandied all about town and delivered in all manners of unfavourable colours.

A development which threatens the APC’s hold on power as the state prepares for election to determined who becomes next governor.
