Abuja: FRSC, Other Agencies Begin Mandatory Medical And Psychological Evaluation For Traffic Offenders
for traffic offenders in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Sector Command, in collaboration with the FCT Administration and other relevant traffic management agencies, has commenced a joint enforcement operation aimed at ensuring compliance with the mandatory medical and psychological evaluation for traffic offenders in the Federal Capital Territory.
The initiative, being implemented in accordance with Regulation 176, Sub-regulation (5) of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, requires persons apprehended for applicable traffic offences to undergo the prescribed evaluation at an approved government hospital, at their own expense, before prosecution.
The joint task force will particularly target offences with serious implications for road safety and traffic management, including excessive overloading, traffic light violations, route violations such as driving against traffic, and indiscriminate or illegal parking.
The enforcement is designed to go beyond conventional sanctions by identifying behavioural, psychological or medical factors that may contribute to dangerous driving, while reinforcing discipline and responsible road use among motorists and commercial transport operators.
Authorities have emphasized that the exercise is not intended to harass law-abiding motorists, but to strengthen compliance, protect lives and property, and ensure safer and more orderly roads across the FCT.
The FRSC and FCT Administration have therefore called on motorists and other road users to cooperate fully with members of the joint task force and comply with all lawful directives issued by authorized personnel. The commencement of the exercise speaks volume of the commitment of the authorities to adopting a coordinated, multi-dimensional approach to road safety through enforcement, medical and psychological assessment, public enlightenment, engineering interventions and inter-agency collaboration. Road users are reminded that safety remains a shared responsibility and that responsible driving is not merely a legal obligation, but a personal commitment to preserving lives.
