Gov Diri Opens 2-Day Upskilling Program In Yenagoa

for sustainable marine and blue economy

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has launched a 2-day Upskilling program for sustainable marine and blue economy at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Onopa, Yenagoa.

The initiative, tagged “Strengthening Stakeholders Capacity for an All Inclusive and Sustainable Blue Economy”, is a collaborative effort between the Bayelsa State Government, the World Bank, and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

The Governor who was represented by Prof. Nimibofa Ayaowei, Secretary to the State Government, expressed gratitude to the World Bank for the timely collaboration.

He noted that Bayelsa State is poised to tap into its blue economy potential, saying the road to hit the Atlantic to harness its potentials is on fast landing.

“So, the collaboration, the support is coming very timely. In trying to harness the potential of the Atlantic, we are on a fast lane to hit the Atlantic with road networks.

If we don’t hit the Atlantic, there cannot be prosperity the way we want to define it”, he stated.

Dr. Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, Bayelsa Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, said the program is timely as the state strengthens its foundations for a modern, sustainable, and inclusive blue economy.

On his part, Technical Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Prof. Busayo Fakinlede, thanked Governor Douye Diri for hosting the program and supporting the sector.

He noted Bayelsa’s proactive approach, being the first state to create a Ministry for Marine and Blue Economy after the federal government.

Prof. Edmond Allison Oguru delivered a keynote lecture on “Harnessing The Blue Economy Potentials In Bayelsa State”, sharing insights on tapping into Bayelsa’s blue economy resources.

Dignitaries present included Hon. Ebiuwou Koku Obiyai, Commissioner for Information, Hon. Uroupaye Nimizuo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Aquaculture, Hon. Godspower Ake, Hon. Ebikitin Diongoli, Niger Delta University delegation and other top government officials and stakeholders from the Marine industry.
