Why Chelsea Is Prepared To Pay Over £95m For RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons

After years of scattergun recruitment

Chelsea have never been shy in the market but this time, their ambition feels precise.

Reports indicate the club is preparing a £95 million bid for Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons, as Enzo Maresca looks to inject intelligence, invention, and versatility into the Stamford Bridge engine room.

After years of scattergun recruitment and an ever-rotating cast of managers, Chelsea’s new regime under Maresca is shaping a more streamlined philosophy, and Simons, currently at RB Leipzig on loan from PSG, fits it perfectly. A technically gifted creator with positional fluidity, the 22-year-old could be the conductor Chelsea have lacked since Eden Hazard’s prime.

Maresca, who learned under Pep Guardiola, demands control in midfield and width from inverted full-backs, which puts heavy creative weight on the central creators. Simons, who can drift from wide to central lanes and operate between the lines, is tailor-made for that system.

Last season, the Dutchman produced 9 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, largely operating as a No. 10 and left-sided playmaker. His ability to break lines with passing or ball-carrying makes him a direct upgrade over Conor Gallagher, whose future remains uncertain.

Unlike some previous high-profile gambles, Simons boasts Champions League experience, tactical maturity from his PSV and Leipzig stints, and a pressing intensity Chelsea have lacked in attacking transitions.

At 22, he also aligns with the club’s youth-centric project joining the likes of Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo, and Cole Palmer in what could be a dynamic, balanced midfield for years.

Chelsea’s biggest hurdle isn’t Leipzig; it’s PSG. The Parisians reportedly have a buyback clause around €60m and could easily match or better Chelsea’s offer if they see long-term value in bringing Simons back permanently. Leipzig is reportedly stalling until after their pre-season finale live on DStv’s SuperSport Football Plus. Arsenal is also monitoring the situation.

If Chelsea can pull this off, it would be one of the most surgically smart transfers of the Boehly era.
