President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom, declaring that his administration remains devoted to protecting the rights of citizens of all faiths and fostering mutual understanding across communities.

In a statement issued from the Presidency, Tinubu said Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty, emphasizing that his government will continue to promote peaceful coexistence among Christians, Muslims, and adherents of other beliefs.

“Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions,” he stated.

Tinubu dismissed any portrayal of Nigeria as a country marked by religious intolerance, noting that such characterisation does not reflect the nation’s reality or the government’s sustained efforts to safeguard freedom of belief.

“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” he said.

The president maintained that religious freedom and tolerance have always been core tenets of Nigeria’s collective identity and will remain so under his leadership. He added that the country opposes all forms of persecution and will continue to ensure that every Nigerian can practice their faith without fear or hindrance.

“Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths. Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths,” he said.

Tinubu reaffirmed that Nigeria’s democracy is built on respect, inclusion, and unity, adding that his government would continue to strengthen partnerships that promote peace, security, and religious harmony within and beyond the country.
