expressed deep sorrow over the passing
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose entire life was defined by duty, honour, and unyielding service to Nigeria.
In a solemn statement released on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Tinubu confirmed that the former President died at a hospital in the United Kingdom earlier in the day. He said the news was received with “profound sorrow and a heavy heart.”
The President paid tribute to Buhari’s enduring legacy, noting that he served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader between January 1984 and August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
“President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures,” Tinubu stated. “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
As part of national mourning, President Tinubu ordered that all national flags across Nigeria be flown at half-staff for seven days. He also announced that an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) would be convened on Tuesday, July 15, solely in honour of the late former leader.
In his words: “We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”
President Tinubu further assured that the Federal Government would accord Buhari full state honours “befitting his towering contributions to our country.”
He extended his condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children and family, the government and people of Katsina State, and particularly the Daura Emirate.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” the President prayer and concluded, “And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
