A major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape unfolded on Sunday as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso formally announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), signaling what appears to be the beginning of a fresh political realignment ahead of the next electoral cycle.

In a statement dated March 29, 2026, the former Kano State governor declared that his decision takes “immediate effect,” bringing to an end his role as the party’s National Leader and its presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general elections.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said, describing the move as difficult but necessary.

Kwankwaso, who emerged as one of the prominent opposition figures in the last presidential contest, expressed deep appreciation to the party leadership, noting that his journey within the NNPP was marked by commitment and shared purpose.

“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections,” he stated.

While he did not disclose his next political destination, the former minister pointed to unfolding developments within the country’s political environment as a major factor behind his decision.

According to him, “considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment,” it had become imperative to seek “another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”

The resignation is widely seen as a significant blow to the NNPP, a party whose national visibility rose sharply on the back of Kwankwaso’s candidacy and the grassroots strength of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in northern Nigeria.

He extended gratitude to the party’s leadership structure, specifically acknowledging the role of the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and other key organs of the party.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” the heavy weight politician said.

Kwankwaso also paid tribute to the broader party base, including members of the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and supporters across various levels.

The grassroots mobilizer noted that the relationships built over time would remain valuable despite his exit. “I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party — from the ward to the state level, as well as the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission,” he added.

Despite his departure, the seasoned politician left the door open for future collaboration, striking a conciliatory tone that suggests ongoing political engagement with former allies.

Declaring “We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation.”

Although Kwankwaso did not name his next political destination, his reference to “strategic realignment” has fueled speculation within political circles about possible alliances and defections as actors begin early positioning ahead of future elections.

Observers believe his next move could reshape alignments within both ruling and opposition blocs, given his enduring influence and loyal support base.

His exit marks the end of a defining chapter in the NNPP’s evolution and opens a new phase in Nigeria’s ever-shifting political terrain.
