The Senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, was in Ado/Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

His unverified donation of N1 million (one million Naira) to area boys while driving past Oju-Ore in Ota caused commotion in the afternoon.

Senator Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is a widely discussed political figure.

“He was in a convoy moving toward the roundabout just past Papa bus stop, and the area boys swarmed his car. They were given cash in a bundle or something, with many of them shouting it was N1 million and running all over the expressway,” eyewitnesses said.

The term “area boys” is often used to describe a group of unemployed youths engaging in various sharp practices to make a living.

Oju-Ore is part of the Sango-Idiroko expressway, which is currently undergoing roadwork for the construction of a bridge at the intersection as part of an extensive highway expansion project.

Reports revealed that the commotion, caused by area boys chasing after one another across the highway to claim a share of the unverified N1 million gift from Senator Yayi, briefly obstructed traffic.

Many motorists slowed down or came to a complete halt to avoid hitting anyone or damaging their vehicles in the chaos.

“But it didn’t last long, as those with the gifted money darted into side streets, with others chasing after them,” witnesses said.

Additional information revealed that Senator Yayi, a leading aspirant in the race to become the next Governor of Ogun State, was in the area as the Special Guest at the one-year anniversary celebration and launch of the secretariat of the Awori Marketers and Traders of Ado/Odo-Ota.

Gifting money to area boys is not unique to Senator Yayi; it is a common support-building practice adopted by politicians across the country.
