Saraki Reveals Why He Is Happy With Outcome Of PDP NEC Meeting
particularly pleased with the meeting’s outcome for two main reasons
Former Senate President and ex-Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, has expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held on June 30, 2025.
In a statement issued after the high-stakes gathering, Saraki described the meeting as symbolic, noting that it had the potential to either divide the party further or serve as a turning point for unity and forward momentum.
According to him, the party’s leaders made the wise choice to “cross the Rubicon” and consolidate on peace, rather than allow internal divisions to derail its future.
“There was no victor and no vanquished. The winner today is the PDP. Another winner is Nigeria’s democracy because, without a vibrant opposition, democracy dies,” Saraki declared, adding that millions of party members and supporters across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas also emerged victorious.

Saraki, who currently chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum National Reconciliation and Strategy Committee, said he was particularly pleased with the meeting’s outcome for two main reasons. Firstly, he noted, party leaders unanimously endorsed unity as the party’s primary objective—an indication to Nigerians that the PDP remains strong and viable as the country’s main opposition party. Secondly, he commended the spirit of “give and take” that characterized the meeting’s discussions.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by some leaders who, in the interest of peace and unity, conceded their earlier positions on contentious issues. “I thank all our leaders who chose to act in the interest of the party, even at the expense of their personal and partisan comfort,” he said.
With the next NEC meeting slated for July 23 and plans underway for a smooth national convention, Saraki called on party members to build on the momentum, stressing the need for continued cooperation and stability.

He also took the opportunity to counter claims that some members remained in the PDP to undermine it. “If this false narrative were true, the leaders who shifted positions to give peace a chance would have chosen an alternative course of action,” he said.
Saraki concluded by thanking party faithful and reaffirming the PDP’s commitment to building a formidable opposition capable of winning future elections. “There is still a lot of work to be done,” he said. “But the spirit with which we achieved peace today should be sustained going forward.”
