Former Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has expressed profound grief over the death of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, describing the news of his passing as a painful and devastating loss to the state and the country.

Shaibu, who shared his message of condolence on Thursday, said he received the news with “rude shock and deep sadness,” noting that Ewhrudjakpo was more than a colleague — he was a friend and brother whose life was defined by service, purpose and compassion.

He described the late deputy governor as a committed public servant who brought honour, humility and a strong sense of duty to every office he held. According to him, Ewhrudjakpo worked with genuine passion, prioritising the welfare of the people and dedicating his career to the development of Bayelsa State.

The former deputy governor also commiserated with Governor Douye Diri, whom he said has suffered an irreplaceable personal and professional loss. He acknowledged the depth of grief that the governor and the Ewhrudjakpo family must now bear, praying for God’s comfort and strength for them and for the people of Bayelsa State.

As a mark of respect for the late deputy governor, Shaibu announced the cancellation of his family’s annual carol event for this year, describing it as a symbolic gesture to honour the memory of a man he regarded with deep affection and admiration.

He prayed for eternal rest for Ewhrudjakpo and for God’s perpetual light to shine upon him, extending his condolences to all who knew and loved him.
