Bismillah – In the name of God.
After the turbaning of the Oluwo at Ode-Ọba, on the same day Oluwo went into seclusion (Ipẹbi) where he was meant to spend 90 days as required by the tradition.
Ọọ̀ni Adeyẹye Ogunwusi was scheduled to be officially coronated on 5th of December, exactly 26 days after the Oluwo went into the seclusion.
Along the line, I was at the Ipẹbi in a closed-door meeting with the Oluwo, Chief Oosa of Iwo, chief Ọntọ (the head custodian of the Ipẹbi), Honourable Toogun and professor Lai Olurode where I was informed of Oluwo’s decision to untimely exit the seclusion. Oluwo was against the tradition and all suggestions and advice that may keep him at Ipẹbi for 90 days, as the tradition required. At the peak of this disconcertment and worry, the Oluwo asked chief Ọntọ to convince us that all the Ipẹbi traditional rites have been done. Chief Ọntọ affirmed that all traditional rites had been “compressed” and performed.
I was told by, honourable Toogun, the convener of the meeting and professor Lai Olurode to persuade my friend, the Oluwo, to revert his decision. They advised that he should NOT leave the seclusion after 26 days as against the prescribed 90 days of rites. We dragged on this topic for a very long time and the Oluwo gave me reasons, that the late Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Tadese was only in the seclusion for 45 days as against the stipulated 90 days. And chief Ọntọ equally said that Oluwo did not have to be there for 90 days.
Despite Oluwo’s excuse, I was equally against his untimely exit of Ipẹbi. I had to take Oluwo back into the days of the late Oluwo Tadese, that, as far as I can remember, Oba Tadese was on the throne for 21 years or so but that he only satisfactorily performed his royal duties for only about 9 or 10 years.
I further tried to convince him that, doesn’t he think the untimely exit of Ipẹbi could be too risky and be an impediment to long and peaceful reign on the throne?!
I advised he rethink his decision, and that he, Oluwo, would have accepted to stay even 365 days in Ipẹbi if that had been the only stringent condition for him to become the Oluwo.
On that very day I sounded a warning alarm to chief Ọntọ that, if anything should go wrong with the Oluwo spiritually or otherwise, he will be held responsible, and God and others there will bear me witness. Chief Oosa of Iwo, the professor and honourable Toogun were all present, and are still alive to confirm this. Those present apart from Oluwo and chief Ọntọ also did not agree to this 26 days in the seclusion but Oluwo had made up his mind and that was final since he’s the king and chief Ọntọ agreed with Oluwo’s decision to hurriedly leave the seclusion.
I tried again and again to convince Oluwo as far as I could on his plan to untimely exit the seclusion , and I openly spoke my mind but we could not win the challenge with Oluwo and chief Ọntọ.
The Oluwo untimely exited the seclusion. He went to the palace late that very night in a strange way, and Ooni Ogunwusi’s coronation was next day in Ile Ife.
