The rivalry between Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, and Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI) is reshaping the political atmosphere in Ogun West.

Despite Yayi’s rising profile and celebrated performance in office, the loyal support base of Isiaka remains firmly intact.

Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the Senate, is enjoying widespread acclaim for his empowerment schemes and political visibility.

Isiaka

Yet, sources reveal that Isiaka—currently in the House of Representatives for Yewa South/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency—still commands a strong following among core Yewa natives who see him as their authentic homegrown candidate.

Both men embody the long-cherished hope of Yewa producing an Ogun State governor for the first time. But their political journeys have shaped perceptions.

GNI, a familiar figure in Ogun politics, is making his fourth attempt at the governorship and is regarded as the “local boy” of Yewaland. Yayi, on the other hand, built his career in Lagos, serving as Senator for Lagos West until 2023, when he crossed over to represent Ogun West. Though his influence in Ogun dates back to 2015, many still view him as an outsider.

“It’s a matter of pride,” a political observer explained. “GNI’s loyalists believe that if anyone should take the glory of finally delivering a Yewa governor after years of agitation, it should be him—one of their own. They are not ready to concede that ground.”

Meanwhile, Yayi’s campaign machinery is in full swing. After months of unofficial engagements that made him the talk of the district, his team is preparing to launch formal consultations across the state, a move aimed at consolidating his popularity and penetrating GNI’s support base.

“Naturally, they are targeting GNI’s camp too,” a source disclosed. “But it’s an open secret that GNI is not backing down—not at this stage.”

The unfolding contest highlights the deeper struggle within Yewa: whether grassroots loyalty to a homegrown son or the broader appeal of a cosmopolitan politician will finally break the jinx and deliver Ogun’s governorship to the region.
