Ogun Abuzz With Talks Of Iyabo Obasanjo’s Guber Ambition
daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo
Talks are emerging in Ogun State, particularly in Abeokuta, about Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, being positioned as a possible successor to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The development is stirring reactions, especially among supporters of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi — the long-standing frontrunner for the 2027 governorship race.
Yayi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is widely seen as the candidate to beat. But his Yewa origin — a low-vote area yet to produce a governor — is being exploited by rivals.
Iyabo, a former senator from Ogun Central, hails from one of the two major voting blocs that have alternated the governorship since the state’s creation in 1976. Governor Abiodun, who completes his second term in 2027, is from Ogun East.
Although Yayi has traced his maternal roots to Ogun Central, influential figures in the district are pushing for a thoroughbred indigene — a sentiment fueling speculations about Iyabo’s emergence.
Her father’s enduring influence as a cultural icon and Ogun’s most famous export strengthens the narrative.
For now, her promoters remain silent on the political platform that could carry her ambition.
