The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has dismissed reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), clarifying that ongoing activities at the facility are part of scheduled maintenance operations.

In a statement issued by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC Ltd. reassured the public that operations at WRPC remain under control.

The company explained that on January 25, 2025, operations at WRPC Area 1 were deliberately curtailed to facilitate essential intervention works on select equipment.

These include field instruments that required attention to ensure stable and sustainable refinery operations.

The intervention is aimed at maintaining the production of on-specification finished and intermediate petroleum products, particularly Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, and Kerosene (Kero).

NNPC Ltd. confirmed that maintenance activities are progressing as planned, with expectations that Area 1 will resume operations within the next few days. Despite the ongoing work, AGO loading has been sustained at an average of eight trucks per day over the past 11 days, ensuring a steady supply for truck load-out operations.

Reaffirming its commitment to uninterrupted product availability, NNPC Ltd. urged stakeholders to disregard false reports and assured the public of its dedication to completing the maintenance swiftly.

“The company appreciates the patience and cooperation of all stakeholders as it undertakes these essential maintenance activities,” the statement concluded.

The clarification comes amid concerns over misinformation regarding refinery operations, with NNPC Ltd. emphasizing its commitment to transparency and efficiency in Nigeria’s energy sector.
