Let Us Renew Our Commitment To Ideals That Bind Us – Goodluck Jonathan Urges
calling for patriotism, responsible leadership and collective dedication
Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has urged Nigerians to use the dawn of 2026 as an opportunity to renew their commitment to the ideals that unite the nation, calling for patriotism, responsible leadership and collective dedication to national progress.
In his New Year message, Jonathan extended warm greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad, as well as to friends of the country across the world, expressing gratitude to God for the gift of life and the privilege of a new beginning. He noted that the transition into a new year naturally invites reflection and hope, both of which, he said, should guide the nation’s outlook in 2026.
Reflecting on the outgoing period, the former president acknowledged that Nigeria had faced significant trials, including economic pressures and persistent insecurity, which have tested the resilience of citizens and brought hardship and loss to many families.
The former President said these challenges serve as a reminder of the responsibility Nigerians owe one another and the critical importance of people-oriented leadership.
Jonathan, however, stressed that despite the difficulties, the enduring character of the Nigerian people has remained evident.
He observed that across communities, Nigerians have continued to demonstrate courage, solidarity and quiet determination, sustained by shared values, diversity and a collective belief in a better future.
According to ex-number one citizen, this spirit of resilience remains one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths and must serve as the foundation for unity, peace and lasting progress.
As the country moves further into 2026, he called on citizens and leaders alike to match patriotism with a renewed sense of duty, adding that leadership at all levels must be anchored in service, humility, integrity and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people.
He emphasised that only through shared responsibility, mutual respect and unwavering dedication to the national interest can Nigeria continue on the path toward stability and inclusive development.
Jonathan concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful, healthy and fulfilling year, while praying for the nation’s steady advancement toward unity, justice and shared prosperity.
