Lagos Speaker: Obasa’s Allies-Turned-Foes In Lagos Assembly Arrested
played a role in his removal
Emerging details indicate that two former allies of ex-Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who played a role in his removal, have been arrested.
They are Sylvester Ogunkelu, representing Epe Constituency 2, and Olanrewaju Afini from Lagos Island 1.
Sources say the two lawmakers were “arrested” by security operatives based on a petition alleging they broke into the office of the Clerk during the process that led to Obasa’s removal as Speaker.
Obasa was removed as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, January 13, 2025, while he was abroad.
The Clerk was also relieved of his duties.
Obasa returned to the state on Saturday, January 25, 2025, insisting that he remains the Speaker, citing assertions that his removal was illegal.
But other stakeholders say the rules were followed.
Inside sources claim Obasa wrote the petition that led to the arrest of Ogunkelu and Afini.
The two lawmakers secured party tickets and won elections based on the political strength of the embattled former Speaker, according to those in the know.
Ogunkelu took the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket from the more popular Eleniyan (Segun Olulade) while Afini displaced Sola Giwa.
“They are among those whose involvement in his (Obasa’s) removal he still finds hard to believe,” sources insist.
Further information reveals that new Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda and other lawmakers have rallied support and are taking steps to secure the release of Ogunkelu and Afini.
