In a decisive move to safeguard Lagos State’s fragile waterfront ecosystems, the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID), led by Commissioner Dayo Alebiosu, launched a robust enforcement operation on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Ikota Creek in the Eleganza area of Lekki.

The operation—described as a strategic effort to uphold urban planning integrity and environmental sustainability—resulted in the issuance of over 100 contravention notices and 10 stop-work orders to developers and individuals involved in illegal construction activities within the creek corridor.

According to Alebiosu, investigations revealed a disturbing trend of severe encroachments, including attempts to unlawfully alter the natural course of the creek.

In addition, the Ministry halted unauthorized reclamation activities that not only violated planning regulations but also posed considerable threats to nearby communities and infrastructure.

“Our waterfronts are not to be misused or exploited. They serve as natural buffers against climate-related threats and are critical to the long-term resilience of our city,” Alebiosu emphasized. “This operation signals our unwavering commitment to sustainable development and regulatory compliance.”

The Commissioner reaffirmed the MWID’s mission to ensure the sustainable management of Lagos’ coastal assets, underlining the importance of preserving these vital resources for both current residents and future generations.

The enforcement drive is part of a broader push by the state government to strengthen environmental governance, enhance resilience to flooding and erosion, and preserve the natural heritage of Lagos amid rapid urbanization pressures.

By acting swiftly to reclaim and protect Ikota Creek, the MWID is setting a strong precedent for responsible waterfront stewardship and aligning with Lagos State’s vision of building a more livable, resilient, and inclusive megacity
