Emerging details have it that the ill-fated thugs’ invasion of the Senate and stealing of the symbol of authority – mace runs deeper than what is in the public space.

Revelations made to societynow.ng have it that the ultimate plot was to impeach Senate President Bukola Saraki through the back door.

Saraki is currently in Washington attending the Spring Meeting of the World Bank-International Monetary Fund(IMF).

Suspended federal lawmaker Ovie Omo-Agege had reportedly stormed the Senate with a band of unknown characters widely labeled thugs.

The move reportedly resulted in a big scuffle with Senators who attempted to enforce his suspension.

The characters brought into the national assembly by the suspended Senators had “stolen” the mace in an audacious act of daylight robbery.

Though eventually “recovered”, the act of stealing the mace by the thugs blew the lid off a deeper plot.

“They would just use the mace to hold an illegal sitting at someplace and impeached or suspend Saraki and other senators Omo-Agege and his backers feel are working against their interests” a source pointed out.

Omo Agege was suspended for 90days by the Senate for making disparaging claims that the election re ordering bill under consideration was targeting President Muhammadu Buhari.

The presence of the mace confers authority on the Senate.

“Those who stole it would have used the mace to give the plot against Saraki and others credibility and create legal problems for the nation” a source pointed out.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu presided during the ill-fated invasion by Omo-Agege and his “men”.

Saraki who is still abroad issued a statement commending the Senate for sending out a strong message that it is ready to defend it’s constitutional mandate.

Omo Agege issued a statement as well denying involvement in the plot, insisting he attended Senate session based on legal advice from his lawyers.

He admitted efforts were made to stop him but insisted he was protected by federal lawmakers who share his sentiments.

The statements which threatened legal action against claims he stole the “mace” was however silent on whether he brought thugs into the Senate or not.
