How Savvy Shopping On Online Platform Turns Ordinary Into Exceptional
whether it’s around fashion, home decor or nice things for the kids.
The daily grind. Finding the balance between work, family and time for yourself. It’s not easy. And that’s not even counting the pressure (real or imagined) of needing to keep up with the crowd – whether it’s around fashion, home decor or nice things for the kids.
While many women talk of wanting to trade it for a simpler life, one mother did just that – and she’s never looked back.
Gelena is a 37-year-old single mother to two girls and studies law part-time. Two years ago, she decided to step away from the daily hustle, and the constant juggle, to pursue content creation full-time in pursuit of a more fulfilling life. Her goal wasn’t just to build a career online. It was to create something that could inspire others, especially women navigating similar challenges, while giving herself the freedom to reclaim her story.
“I no longer wanted a life that was just about getting by,” she said. “This is my way of building something bigger.”
While her channel focuses on what she calls “luxury beauty on a budget”, the premise and philosophy is more inclusive than that. It’s the belief that self-care and style should be available to everyone — even mothers who are stretched thin, both emotionally and financially.
She knows what it means to put herself last. “When every penny counts, it’s easy for moms to forget themselves,” she said. Over time, she came to see how small acts, a scented candle, a delicate bracelet, even a beautifully designed jar in the bathroom, could provide a vital emotional lift. Self-care and indeed self-expression, whether in how we dress ourselves or decorate our homes is not about mere aesthetics but about how it makes us and others feel. “When I feel better, my kids feel it too,” Gelena shares.
Importantly, Gelena is firm on the belief that these forms of expression shouldn’t break the bank and herself found online marketplace Temu to be a lifeline in this regard, making moments of magic possible.
“Temu was like a little revolution for me,” she said. “Suddenly, I could treat myself and my kids to nice things without worrying about my bank account. That gave me room to create without compromising.”
That creative freedom soon turned into a kind of personal challenge. Could she pull together an entire look – clothing, accessories, beauty products – for less than what most people spend on a single handbag?
“A whole vibe”
“It became a whole vibe,” she said. “And when I saw the result, I was shocked. It looked like something from a high-end brand, but everything was from Temu.”
Her approach resonated with her followers. In one of her most widely shared posts, Gelena wore a tone-on-tone outfit in warm neutrals, paired with earrings, a belt, and a handbag. She captioned it simply: guess what’s the budget? The post went viral.
“People assumed everything was expensive,” she said. “They were genuinely surprised. That’s when I knew I was onto something.”
A recent IPSOS survey found that 80% of respondents globally believe Temu offers value for money, with shoppers reporting average savings of 24%. More than half said they would recommend the platform to others, underscoring its growing reputation as a go-to destination for smart, savvy shopping.
Redefining luxury, embracing self
For Gelena, the goal is to dismantle a set of assumptions. Luxury, she argues, has little to do with brand names or price tags. “It’s about how something makes you feel,” she said. “A silky eyeshadow, a bowl that catches the light, a piece of jewellery that feels like you. It can change your whole day.”
Her following grew. So did the comments — messages from women who hadn’t bought anything for themselves in months, who felt invisible, and who were moved by the idea that beauty could be within reach.
“Thank you,” one wrote. “You made me buy that little thing I would never have treated myself to.” Another said, “I felt beautiful today thanks to your tip.”
“That’s the most beautiful part of what I do,” Gelena said. “When someone writes that, I know it’s not just content. It’s sisterhood.”
She leveraged her taste for aesthetics to appreciate the beauty from the sidelines. Growing up, she admired elegance but never believed it was meant for people like her.
Gelena’s content is, simply, about giving women, no matter their life situation, permission to feel like their best selves. And that’s worth celebrating.
