As former President Olusegun Obasanjo marked his 88th birthday on March 5, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid a special tribute to the elder statesman, recognizing his towering contributions to Nigeria’s development.

In his message, President Tinubu described Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” whose life has been intricately woven into the country’s history for over six decades.

Tinubu’s statement underscored Obasanjo’s role in shaping Nigeria at various critical moments. From his military service, where he accepted the instrument of surrender from the Biafran side in 1970, to his leadership as Head of State after the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, Obasanjo’s name remains prominent in Nigeria’s political evolution.

The tribute also highlighted his historic return to power as a civilian president in 1999, after his release from prison, and his efforts in deepening democracy.

While acknowledging Obasanjo’s contributions to national unity, peace, and governance, Tinubu also touched on the former president’s often controversial nature.

“Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership,” Tinubu noted, reflecting the complex relationship Obasanjo has had with successive administrations, including his own.

Beyond Nigeria, Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s role on the global stage, citing his efforts in conflict resolution, diplomacy, and advocacy for good governance across Africa.

He lauded the former leader’s continuous engagement in national and international affairs, despite his advanced age, and prayed for his continued strength and wisdom.

“At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him the grace and strength to live for more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” Tinubu stated.

The message concluded with a warm congratulatory note on behalf of the Nigerian government and its people, cementing Obasanjo’s legacy as one of the nation’s most enduring and influential figures—respected, sometimes debated, but never ignored.
