The global music landscape is buzzing with loads of talented artistes and performers, who churn out loads of music content on a high-speed frequency. As varied as the music genre that exist are, so also are the audience who consume such content. In an age of social media boom where individuals now own platforms to share their opinions, sometimes incognito, how the audience reacts to music content has become an area of interest for stakeholders in the industry. These reactions, in form of feedback are either critical of or adulating the content. In addition, this largely depends on how the content sits with the audience. While been critical of a content is in no way a wrong thing to do, how it is done and offered is more important. Thus, when does criticism stop being constructive and become bullying and take on the form of trolling?

On the latest episode of MTV Base’s flagship roundtable show, Musicology, Ehiz and a few of the brightest minds on the Nigerian music scene gather to decipher the complex relationship between Creatives, Critics and Trolls.

The panel is made up of; Writer and journalist, Jide Taiwo; Entertainment lawyer and partner F&F Consulting, Folake Falana; Senior editor at Pulse NG, Ayomide Tayo; Rapper, Blaqbonez; Music Programmer, MTV Base, Daniel Obende; OAP, Do2dtun and Talent Manager, Agwu Obinna.

Hosted by VJ Ehiz, the new episode examines and breaks down the issue of critics and trolls and where to draw the line. One of the many problems highlighted during the enlightening session is the fact that many critics forget that their opinions require factual evidences. On this topic, here is what OAP and super hypeman, Do2dtun, said “Whatever you say as a critic is still an opinion but it should still be backed up with facts. Many people talk but they are not critical thinkers.”

Folake Falana, chipped in to further elaborate on Do2dtun’s point by saying “The trolling problem happens because people forget that it’s an opinion and they need to be professional. There are ways to get your point across without being malicious or making it seem like an attack.”

Approaching the conversation from a psychological angle, Jide Taiwo said “Most trolls project their pain and insecurities on others. Many of them just share their opinion to get a laugh and they forget that for every gbas, there is a corresponding gbos.”

This and many more gems will be shared on the next unmissable episode of Musicology. Watch Musicology on Thursday, August 29 on MTV Base Channel 322 at 8pm. You can also follow the conversation @mtvbasewest on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #MTVBaseMusicology.
