Baseless & Absurd: Onanuga Counters El-Rufai, Says Tinubu Has No Plan Beyond 2031
dismissed as “baseless and absurd” recent claims by former Kaduna state governor,
Bayo Onanuga, Senior Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed as “baseless and absurd” recent claims by former Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, that the President harbours plans of becoming a “life president” after 2027.
Onanuga said El-Rufai’s narrative reflects a growing sense of frustration after it became evident that attempts by his allies in a new political camp to derail Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 are proving futile.
He noted that last week’s massive reception for the President in Kaduna exposed the depth of support Tinubu continues to enjoy across the North, contradicting El-Rufai’s assertions that the region had abandoned him.

According to Onanuga, El-Rufai’s surprise at the President’s warm welcome has led him into fabrications and political hallucinations.
The Senior Special Adviser stressed that Tinubu remains a democrat committed to due process and constitutional limits, with no intention of staying beyond May 28, 2031, when his second term will end, if re-elected in 2027.
Onanuga advised Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna state to reach out to his predecessor, saying El-Rufai “may well need professional counselling” to stop the spread of unfounded claims designed to mislead the public.
