The Omoluabi Progressives has raised alarm over what it described as a coordinated attempt to politically and physically eliminate former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

In a statement on Saturday, the group said recent remarks, threats, and state-backed actions point to a sinister agenda aimed at silencing Aregbesola permanently under the guise of politics.

It cited a series of public comments interpreted as open incitement to violence, including warnings that he would “face consequences” for his political independence, and calls for him to be “made an example of.” The group described such rhetoric as dangerous and unacceptable in a democracy.

The statement further alleged that on August 14, security operatives disrupted a political rally in Sagamu, Ogun State, where Aregbesola was billed to lead the campaign for a bye-election candidate. According to the group, the venue was vandalised, equipment seized, and Aregbesola obstructed from attending, an action it said deepened suspicion of coordinated repression.

“These attacks, from inflammatory rhetoric to physical obstruction, represent nothing less than what analysts have described as the anatomy of assassination politics,” the group declared.

The Omoluabi Progressives aligned with a coalition of Yoruba self-determination groups that condemned the threats, insisting that intimidation must never replace healthy political contest. The statement also pointed to Aregbesola’s reconciliation efforts and developmental achievements in Osun and Lagos as proof of his enduring contributions.

It stressed that Aregbesola committed no offence by choosing an independent political path and demanded that his constitutional rights be respected.

“We therefore warn, in the clearest possible terms, that any plot to harm Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola will be resisted by the people,” the group said. “Those behind these plots must desist immediately. The safety, dignity, and political rights of Yoruba leaders must not be sacrificed on the altar of opportunism.”

The group called on Nigerians to take note of the growing rhetoric of threats and urged security agencies to prevent democracy from being desecrated by intimidation and violence.

The statement was signed by Oluwaseun Abosede, Spokesperson and Organising Secretary of the Omoluabi Progressives.
