Any Officer Who Fails Promotion Exam 3 Times Will Be Retired At That Rank – Police Service Commission
said the measure was necessary to address incompetence in the force.
Any police officer who fails the promotion examination three times will be retired at that rank, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has warned.
According to a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, PSC chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd) said the measure was necessary to address incompetence in the force.
“Any officer that fails the examination three times will be retired at that level for obvious incompetence,” he said.

The statement quoted Argungu as saying the promotion examination is “one of the innovations that has come to stay” in the career progression of serving officers.
“It may be coming late in the day, but it is a good development expected to restore the dignity of the Nigeria Police Force,” he added.
On Monday, September 29, 2025, thirty senior officers were subjected to the examination, which has now become a prerequisite for promotion.
They included one Assistant Inspector General of Police, two Commissioners, eleven Deputy Commissioners, and sixteen Assistant Commissioners out of the seventeen invited.
The exercise took place at the Solomon Arase Chairman’s Conference Hall on the sixth floor of the Commission’s corporate headquarters.
Argungu stressed that the world had “since embraced the era of skill,” noting that officers who wish to advance in their careers must be prepared to meet the demands of the present day.
Ani added that the Commission was also paying attention to due diligence to ensure that no dead or retired officers are promoted in error.
Those who witnessed the promotion exercise included Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (rtd), Justice Christine Ladi Dabup (rtd), DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), DIG Uba Bala Ringim (rtd), and Alhaji Abdulfatah Mohammed, all commissioners in the PSC.
