‘You Always Know Where You Stand With Him’ — Aregbesola Hails Oyinlola At 75

Rauf Aregbesola, former governor of Osun State, has paid glowing tribute to Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the former military administrator and civilian governor marks his 75th birthday.

In a statement celebrating the diamond jubilee, Aregbesola described Oyinlola as a man of uncommon service whose life has been defined by discipline, courage, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria.

He noted that Oyinlola’s career in the Nigerian Army was marked by steady advancement through the ranks, strategic command responsibilities, and honourable representation of the country on international peacekeeping missions.

According to him, that journey reached a distinguished peak when Oyinlola was appointed Military Governor of Lagos State, where he served with what he described as “discipline and foresight.”

Aregbesola said Oyinlola once again answered the call to national service in the democratic era, when he governed Osun State as an elected civilian governor, a feat that places him in a rare historical category.

“He thus holds the rare historic distinction of having governed two different states in two entirely distinct eras of our national life,” Aregbesola said, describing it as a testament to the depth of trust placed in him and the breadth of his leadership.

Reflecting on their personal relationship, Aregbesola expressed deep gratitude for Oyinlola’s support during his re-election bid in 2014, describing the encouragement and solidarity he received at the time as unforgettable.

He portrayed the former governor as a man of firm character and clear principles, shaped by the Yoruba Omoluabi ethos, strengthened by military discipline, and anchored in a deep Christian faith.

“With him, you always know where you stand — and when he stands with you, his loyalty is absolute and unwavering,” Aregbesola said.

He added that Oyinlola’s strong personality and commanding presence have ensured that he leaves a lasting imprint wherever he goes, noting that he inspires strong reactions, whether admiration or disagreement, which he described as a defining mark of true leadership.
