Rauf Aregbesola’s appointment as the national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stirred fresh momentum within Nigeria’s political opposition.

The former Osun governor and ex-Minister of Interior, once one of President Bola Tinubu’s most loyal political allies, is now playing a key role in what many see as the building blocks of a formidable alternative coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The primary objective of the coalition is to stop Tinubu’s from getting a second term in office.

Aregbesola’s knowledge of the president’s political operations — from structure to strategy — is unmatched among opposition figures.

As someone who helped build the very system now in power, his understanding of Tinubu’s playbook offers tactical depth to the ADC and its new allies.

That experience could prove crucial for a party seeking to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Beyond his strategic knowledge, Aregbesola retains grassroots influence in the key southwest states, particularly Lagos and Osun states.

His ability to connect with ordinary people — traders, artisans, youth, and religious leaders — has not faded.

In places like Osun and Lagos, his name still commands respect and loyalty, which could give the ADC inroads into a region that has traditionally backed Tinubu’s political movement.

He is a former two- term Govenor of Osun state and was the go-to-person for all things Tinubu in Lagos state.

Equally important is Aregbesola’s public image as a principled progressive – he is known for modest personal living.

His return to partisan politics is also being seen as a unifying moment. The ADC is fast becoming a melting pot for former political rivals.

Figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, and Rotimi Amaechi — all with different political histories — now find themselves under the same roof, discussing new directions. Aregbesola’s presence adds balance and depth to this coalition, serving as a bridge between ideological blocs and geographic regions.

His bold move away from the APC has not gone unnoticed within the party he helped build. Discontented APC members — especially those who feel overlooked or pushed aside — now view the ADC as a viable platform. With Aregbesola already there, the party offers a familiar face and credible structure for others considering a switch.

Adding to this mix is his extensive campaign and organisational experience.

From his early days in Lagos politics to leading state and national efforts, Aregbesola has built and managed political machines with measurable results.

For the ADC, his skill in mobilising people, building networks, and running disciplined campaigns could be the structure it needs to move from the fringe to the mainstream.

With Aregbesola now playing a visible role in reshaping the opposition, attention is turning to how the ADC and its new set of leaders plan to translate their collective strength into a viable national alternative.

For now, what is clear is that one of Tinubu’s oldest political allies has not only switched camps — he is fast becoming one of the strongest pillars of what may become the president’s toughest challenge yet.
