passed away peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos,
Nigeria awoke to somber news on Friday, February 14, 2025, as the nation bid farewell to one of its most enduring political figures, Pa Ayo Adebanjo. The revered Afenifere leader, known for his lifelong commitment to justice, democracy, and national unity, passed away peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96.
In a heartfelt statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the elder statesman, describing him as a towering figure whose contributions to Nigeria’s political evolution were unparalleled.
“All who knew Baba Adebanjo drew from his boundless wisdom and cherished the democratic ideals he tirelessly campaigned for,” the President said. “His principled voice, which resonated through decades of political activism, will be deeply missed.”
Adebanjo’s political journey was one of resilience and unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy. A devoted disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, his activism spanned multiple political eras—from his role as Organising Secretary of the Action Group in the First Republic to his leadership in the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic. His fierce opposition to military dictatorship during Nigeria’s turbulent years, particularly as a key member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), solidified his place as one of the country’s most steadfast democracy advocates.
President Tinubu reflected on his personal relationship with Adebanjo, recalling how the elder statesman stood by him during his 1999 gubernatorial bid in Lagos. “His unwavering commitment to truth and justice extended to my journey as a governorship candidate. Baba Adebanjo’s steadfast support was instrumental in my election as Governor of Lagos State under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy,” he stated.

Though their political paths later diverged, the President emphasized that his respect and admiration for the Afenifere leader never wavered. “Until his death, I shared a deep personal bond with Baba Adebanjo; he was like a father figure,” he noted.
Adebanjo’s passing marks the end of an era—he stood among the last of the nationalists and independence heroes who laid the foundation of modern Nigeria. His contributions, both in politics and as a statesman, enriched national discourse and provided guidance during moments of uncertainty.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Adebanjo family, the Afenifere community, and the people of the Southwest, urging the nation to take solace in the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated his life to service. “May his ideals, which he so passionately envisioned, forever resonate in our country,” the President concluded.
As Nigeria mourns the loss of this great patriot, Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s legacy remains—a beacon of hope, courage, and unwavering dedication to the principles of democracy and justice. His voice may have been silenced, but the ideals he championed will continue to inspire generations to come.
