A serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been sent to prison.

His journey to prison began immediately after his conviction Thursday, by a Federal High Court in Uyo.

He is Bassey Albert the Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East district.

Albert left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to become the gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) for the 2023 election in Akwa Ibom state.

The politician said to be a major contender in the gubernatorial race was handed 42 years imprisonment sentence for corruption.

The senator was accused of receiving bribes of 12 cars worth N254 million from an oil marketer, Olajidee Omokore, during his (Albert’s) tenure (2010 – 2014) as commissioner for finance in Akwa Ibom State and was found guilty.
