Retired civil servants, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, on Monday staged another protest over the non-payment of their pension arrears by the Edo State Government.

The aged protesters, who defied the heavy rain, carried various placards bearing inscriptions which read, “give us our pensions benefits,” “pension benefit are economic and human rights of retirees” and “pay us for God’s sake”.
Spokesman for the pensioners, Aigbedion, who lamented that the unpaid entitlements spanned over 42 months, threatened that members of the union would boycott the September 10 governorship election, if their demands were not met.

Aigbedion said, “We all have decided that unless Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole pays us our pension arrears, we, our children, wives and families will not come out to vote for this government.”

‎He explained that many pensioners in the state were faced with the daily challenge of providing for their families, in addition to huge financial indebtedness.

“We have been told that we will be paid but that is coming only to deceive us to vote again for this government.

“We want our money; let Oshiomhole pay us as he said he admitted owing us, though not up to the months we are demanding,” he added.
