Maitama Blackout After Substation Attack – AEDC Reveals
following what it described as an attack and unlawful encroachment
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced that electricity supply to Maitama and adjoining areas has been disrupted following what it described as an attack and unlawful encroachment on its C2 Maitama Substation.
In a public notice issued on Friday, the distribution company said it was currently unable to supply electricity from the substation after it was allegedly invaded by land grabbers.
According to the company, the C2 Maitama Substation is a critical electricity distribution facility serving homes, businesses, diplomatic missions and government institutions in the area.
AEDC alleged that during the encroachment, “vital electricity cables and other network infrastructure were damaged, making it unsafe and technically impossible to continue power supply from the facility.”
The company further alleged that the invasion was led by an Assistant Director of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), adding that it had petitioned the relevant authorities over the incident.
“The substation and its land duly belongs to AEDC. The Company expects a thorough investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
Condemning the alleged encroachment, AEDC said attacks on critical national infrastructure have far-reaching consequences for residents and businesses.
“We strongly condemn any encroachment on critical national infrastructure, as such actions deprive communities of essential electricity supply, disrupt economic activities and compromise public interest,” the company stated.
AEDC apologised to customers for the disruption and assured them that efforts to restore supply would begin once the facility is secured and the damaged infrastructure rebuilt.
“Restoration efforts will commence as soon as the substation is secured and the damaged infrastructure is rebuilt. We appreciate the understanding and support of our customers as we work with the relevant authorities to resolve this unfortunate situation,” the company added.
