Insiders have identified Jimoh Ibrahim as the biggest threat to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s ambition to retain his seat in the next gubernatorial election in Ondo state.

Aiyedatiwa has declared his ambition to contest the November 16, 2024, Ondo gubernatorial election insisting nobody wants to be governor for a year.

The former deputy governor was sworn in as Governor on December 27, 2023, after the death of his principal Rotimi Akeredolu.

Insiders, however, say Aiyedatiwa faces a major challenge from Jimoh Ibrahim, the Senator representing Ondo South.

Ibrahim wants to become the next Governor of Ondo state and has remained very intentional in the hunt for the gubernatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aiyedatiwa is the Governor of Ondo state on the bill of the same political party.

Those who should know disclosed that what has transformed Ibrahim into a formidable contender are intensifying talks that those who worked hard against Aiyedatiwa becoming governor are backing the Senator.

Aiyedatiwa was the subject of intense opposition that almost unseated him as Deputy Governor before fate intervened and he became Governor.

“The persons who persecuted him when he was deputy governor regrouped and decided to back the strongest contender against Aiyedatiwa to ensure he doesn’t serve as Governor beyond the tenure fate has handed him,” Sources say.

The claims are that Ibrahim has been chosen as the “preferred next Governor of Ondo state’ by the political actors against Aiyedatiwa and, the campaign to make him APC gubernatorial candidate is said to be on.

Added information has it that because some of those who worked against Aiyedatiwa have strong roots in the formidable political structure of late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, a plot is afoot to posture Ibrahim as the “candidate” of the Aketi political group to give the Senator’s gubernatorial ambition stronger winds.
