The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has urged students across the country to use social media responsibly and avoid engaging in fraudulent activities online.

Olukoyede gave this advice in Abuja on Thursday, February 20, 2025, during a study tour by students of Gabs Glorious Kids Academy to the Commission’s corporate headquarters. Represented by the Head of Media and Publicity, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, DCE Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede emphasized the need for ethical digital practices, warning that misuse of social media could lead to criminal consequences.

Speaking on the impact of corruption and cybercrime, he encouraged students to harness social media for positive engagements such as research, academic discussions, and personal development. He cautioned against using it for fraudulent activities, cyberbullying, identity theft, and sextortion, stressing that illegal activities online could result in prosecution and imprisonment.

In a presentation, the Head of the Public Interface Unit of the EFCC, Assistant Commander ACE I Tony Orilade, highlighted the influence of social media, noting that while billions worldwide use it for productive purposes, others exploit it for criminal activities.

“Social media is a powerful tool. It can be used to build careers, expand knowledge, and create opportunities, but if misused, it can lead to dire consequences. Be mindful of your digital footprint and use social media responsibly,” Orilade advised.

Similarly, Deputy Superintendent of the EFCC, DSE Armaya’u Aliyu, educated the students on the dangers of cybercrime, warning against sextortion, identity theft, and cyberstalking. He urged them to protect their personal information online and immediately report suspicious activities to trusted authorities.

The Head of the Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit, Assistant Commander ACE II Aisha Mohammed, further encouraged the students to champion integrity in their online and offline interactions, reminding them of their responsibility as future leaders.

“Nigeria belongs to you. Be good, uphold integrity, and contribute to making the nation great. Use social media wisely and encourage your peers to do the same,” she said.

Expressing gratitude, the Principal of Gabs Glorious Kids Academy, Mr. Philip Ayeni, commended the EFCC for the insightful session, promising to reinforce the values of integrity and responsible social media use among students.
