Weeks after he joined others to endorse Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for another term in office, Senator Gbenga Ashafa has changed sides.

Societynow.ng learned that Ashafa who is fighting to retain his seat as Senator representing Lagos East has thrown weight behind Babajide Sanwoolu as the next Governor of Lagos state.

Ashafa was at the formal declaration of Gubernatorial Ambition by Sanwoolu at the City Hall, Lagos Island on Sunday.

‘’Ashafa is seriously backing Sanwoolu to upstage Ambode as next Governor of Lagos state” an insider disclosed.

Sanwoolu recently emerged the aspirant to give incumbent governor Ambode the run of his life in the race to become All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate in Lagos state.

Sanwoolu is backed by the political structure that brought Ambode to power – and has now turned against him – in the make or mar race.

Societynow.ng learned Ashafa’s passion for Sanwoolu is not unconnected with fighting for own survival.

The Senator is up against more connected player within the APC in Lagos state Bayo ‘’Pepper” Osinowo in the bid to retain the Lagos East Senatorial seat.

Osinowo enjoys the confidence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the move to take over Ashafa’s seat.

Tinubu is credited with the emergence of Sanwoolu as the aspirant to replace Ambode as the party candidate.

Ashafa owes his current status as Senator to the political machination of Tinubu and is fighting to retain the powerful politician’s favor in retaining his seat by throwing weight behind Sanwoolu as ‘’next governor of Lagos state” societynow.ng learned.

Societynow.ng learned to his credit, the Sanwoolu campaign team have publicly acknowledged Ashafa’s efforts by listing the Senator as one of the aspirants main supporters.

The Babajide Sanwo-Olu Campaign organization in a statement signed by its Director Media stated ‘’… Some party leaders who have openly identified with Mr. Sanwo-Olu include former Minister and notable politicians, Mr. AdemolaSeriki, Senator GbengaAshafa (Lagos East Senatorial District), former House of Representatives member Mr. MonsuruOwolabi (Bertola), and several current House of Representatives members; former Hon. Commissioner in the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu administration, Mr. Wale Edun, frontline politician Mr. Shakirudeen Sola Giwa, Cardinal Odumbaku (Baba Eto) among others.”.
