Claims that President Bola Tinubu advised the immediate past administration of Muhammadu Buhari to print Naira notes – without commensurate productivity – that resulted in the present-day inflation have been invalidated.

The claims trumpeted by Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to the leader of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar are premised on 2020 “misreports” that Tinubu corrected when they hit town.

Checks revealed that in March 2020 as part of his 68th celebration, Tinubu intervened in issues afflicting the country and issued a statement that advised the Federal Government, with Muhammadu Buhari as President, on steps to cushion the effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic and -arrest the sliding economy.

Tinubu’s counsel, regarding how to use the Naira in staving off the threats from the pandemic that he urged all Nigerians to come together against, was “misreported” in reports dated March 29, 2020.

On March 30, 2020, Tinubu’s correction was featured on news platforms, including Thisday.

The President emphatically stated at the time “One thing I absolutely did not call for was the literal printing of new naira notes by the Federal Government. Such a suggestion is extremely far-fetched and has never been on my mind. It is unfortunate that my prescriptions were badly misunderstood and misreported”.

Buhari remained President for three years after the development.

Tinubu was sworn in as the President of Nigeria on May 29, 2023.

“It is the misrepresentation that was immediately corrected that is being mischievously used to play dark politics now” according to a source
