Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at his private residence in Daura, Katsina State, in a solemn ceremony attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and a host of dignitaries from Nigeria and beyond.

His burial followed the arrival of his remains earlier in the day from London, where he passed away.

The body was flown into Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina and was escorted by a high-powered delegation led by President Tinubu on the over-an-hour-long journey to his hometown of Daura.

Alongside President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima were President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Niger Republic’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former President of Niger, Issoufou Mahamadou, former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, several governors, top government officials, and prominent business leaders who came to pay their final respects.

A massive crowd of mourners, comprising residents and sympathisers, lined the streets of Daura and gathered outside the late President’s residence, where his body lay briefly in state. The funeral prayer (Salatul Janazah) was conducted by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, the Imam of Daura’s Central Mosque, after which the final interment took place at approximately 5:50 p.m.

The burial was marked by full military honours, including a 21-gun salute and reveille, in recognition of the late President’s service to Nigeria as a military head of state and later as a democratically elected leader who governed from 2015 to 2023.

In honour of his legacy, a series of commemorative events have been planned by the Federal Government, beginning with a condolence visit to the Buhari family by a Presidential Committee later Tuesday evening.

President Tinubu described Buhari’s passing as a profound national loss, eulogising him as a leader who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria with discipline and patriotic zeal.

Buhari is survived by his wife, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, children, grandchildren, and an enduring legacy that spans military and civilian leadership eras in Nigeria’s history.
