The gubernatorial ambition of former Central Bank Deputy Governor, Tunde Lemo, is gaining momentum in Ogun State, with former Governor Ibikunle Amosun now being linked to the move.

Lemo’s most visible political appearance since talks of his aspiration to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun emerged was at Amosun’s 68th birthday celebration, held at the Ake Palace Pavilion, Abeokuta, on January 25, 2026.

The event, which attracted a massive turnout from across Ogun State and beyond, has been widely viewed as a demonstration of Amosun’s enduring grassroots influence.

Political whispers around Lemo’s ambition reportedly intensified after he shared the stage with Amosun and other key loyalists of the former governor at the event.

“By providing that platform, Amosun effectively pushed Lemo’s name into grassroots politics,” an insider said.

Although Amosun used the occasion to reaffirm support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and made no direct reference to the governorship race, observers describe the optics as a silent endorsement.

Amosun, a two-term governor, is known to be determined to influence the choice of Governor Abiodun’s successor, having opposed Abiodun’s elections in 2019 and 2023.

Abiodun, meanwhile, is said to be working to become the first Ogun governor to successfully install a preferred successor.

Lemo, like Amosun, is from Ogun Central Senatorial District, and all key actors are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite the growing attention around Lemo, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) remains the frontrunner in the 2027 race, buoyed by a long-running, multi-layered campaign.

Adeola represents Ogun West and is the face of the agitation for the Yewa axis to produce a governor for the first time, while also tracing maternal roots to Ogun Central.
