Adebutu’s Allies Highlight PDP’s Strengths Ahead Of Remo Rep By-Election

is taking place in a politically significant zone

With the August 16, 2025 Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency by-election fast approaching, supporters of Ladi Adebutu have begun mobilising, spotlighting what they describe as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) growing strength in the area.

The PDP, Ogun State’s main opposition party, continues to draw momentum from Adebutu’s influence.

Widely regarded as the party’s most prominent figure in the state, Adebutu has remained central to its political structure and grassroots appeal.

The by-election is taking place in a politically significant zone—Adebutu’s stronghold—which also happens to be the home base of Governor Dapo Abiodun. Both men hail from the same local government area, making the contest not just a test of party popularity but another chapter in their increasingly intense political rivalry.

Although the former occupant of the federal seat, Adewunmi Onanuga, is a prominent APC figure, PDP loyalists argue that the political tide has shifted in their favour. Their argument is simple: PDP currently controls three of the four state House of Assembly seats in the federal constituency—Remo North, Ikenne, and one of the two Sagamu slots.

“Based on what is on ground, PDP already has a strong foothold in this federal constituency. With three of the four state assembly seats under our control, we are confident of building on this foundation to reclaim the House of Reps seat,” one party supporter stated.

Political observers say the by-election is shaping up as another direct contest between Adebutu and Abiodun—two political heavyweights whose rivalry has grown more personal and entrenched with each election cycle.

Since 2019, Governor Abiodun has consistently triumphed in both direct and proxy electoral battles against Adebutu. While Adebutu has challenged these outcomes—including the 2023 governorship race where both men were their party’s standard bearers—his legal and political efforts to reverse the results have so far been unsuccessful.

As the by-election nears, both camps are expected to intensify efforts, with the Remo axis once again emerging as a critical battleground in Ogun State’s shifting political landscape.
